Shawn Lovato is a bassist and composer whose work is part of a scene of musical experimentation that spans the many traditions, approaches, and styles of creative contemporary music.  As a member of the contemporary ensemble Hotel Elefant, he has worked with composers such as John Luther Adams, Richard Carrick, David Lang, and Michael Gordon.  Lovato has also composed for this group, recently premiering the work "Microcosms-A Suite for Improvisers," which is a five-movement suite written for musicians of different backgrounds and disciplines, placing them within a framework where they can explore their common ground as artists and improvisers.  As a member of the improvisation and jazz communities, Lovato collaborates with some of the most dynamic musicians in the scene.  These include Brad Shepik, Oscar Noriega, Santiago Leibson, and Chris Carroll who form his quintet, Cycles of Animation, who recorded and released his music on Skirl Records in 2017, a trio with guitarist Todd Neufeld and drummer Colin Hinton, and the group Open Tabs, a quintet co-led by fellow composer/improvisers Santiago Leibson and Yuma Uesaka.
